OK, so really… why did we start this?

By Mr. BlackSheep | September 19, 2007

Yep… this is it. The very first post on what may be a life-long diary of sorts. If the pendulum swings the other way, this will be one of a handful of entries made before life gets in the way and this grand idea of a blog becomes barely noticeable in the rear-view mirror of history.

The look of the site will no doubt change as time goes on. The content will be added to. Perhaps even our spelling and punctuation will improve a bit. But those changes are not the reason for this blog. Oh, no. You see, this is all about creating a digital mirror – a place to come to in days and years to follow in order to see where we’ve been. In short, an on-line open-book diary. Best of all, you get to share it with us!

Without speaking in great platitudes of lofty altruistic concepts, we’re starting this because our life is about to change radically. But I can’t spill the beans just yet… I’ve got some typing to do first.

I guess when we consider our life, perhaps the biggest change in it is that of being born. Not that I remember this change all that well, but I’m pretty sure I was born, and for God to make something out of nothing is a pretty big change. So, that qualifies as Life’s Biggest Change #1 – the creation of life itself.

Life’s Biggest Change #2 – Well, if gettin’ born was number one, then gettin’ born again has got to be number two. This statement will strike you in one of two ways: Either you’ll be entirely comfortable with reading it, just as you would any other run-of-the-mill sentence, or it’ll strike you as a bit odd, fanatical, or even cult-like. If you fit into the first group, I’ll probably see you in Heaven someday. If you fit more in to the second group, somewhere in-between, or just aren’t sure, the bad news is this… I’ll be in Heaven but I won’t be seeing you there. John 3:5 [show] Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (ESV)

reads “Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.” Bottom line: Life’s Biggest Change #2 has got to be the becoming of a genuine child of God by becoming born-again.

Life’s Biggest Change #3 – Marriage. Two become one, usually by brute force, blunt trauma, threats, deception, under-the-table deals, some sweet talk, and a generous sprinkling of grace. We’ve been at it 14 years now, and this change has barely started. Perhaps that’s good though… I wouldn’t want her getting bored with me quite so early!

Life’s Biggest Change #4 – Children. Some might elevate this above #3, but not me. You see, we’re about to experience Life’s Biggest Change #4 for ourselves. Yepp… there’s a bun in the oven. And to completely stifle all rumors, both past and present, it’s not that we couldn’t have children in the past, it’s simply that we didn’t. There were no medical issues, no fertility issues, no problems that we know of. We were simply waiting on God’s prompting and timing for us. And His timer sounded in August. The cool thing is, it’s so apparent that He had been preparing us for this in so many ways and circumstances over the last few years. I’m so glad I didn’t listen to the world and have children a year or two after we got married. Not that it’s wrong, it was just wrong for us. Listening to God is always the better option.

Life’s Biggest Change #5 – I have no clue. We’re at number 4 right now. There has got to be a few things between #4 and death, I just have no clue what they are. But I think if we continue to update this blog, it’ll become really clear what #5, #6, and all the rest would be. And you’re invited to travel along with us as we journal our lives online.
